Corvezzo Prosecco - Organic to the Core

Corvezzo makes exclusively organic Prosecco, over half of which is estate grown. This bold choice was made by third generation "happy farmer" Giovanni Corvezzo as soon as he came to work full-time at the family farm near Treviso, one of two historical centers of the Prosecco production region. Not only has the switch to organic farming given Giovanni healthier grapes with thicker skins good for fending off the Veneto's occasionally finicky weather, he believes the wines are tastier, too. I can't say anything about the pre-organic wines, but these certainly are good wines, especially for the money.

To further the Corvezzo mission to be good for the environment, Corvezzo has built both photovoltaic and biomass plants. Moreover, they use lightweight bottles and recycled packaging materials. If only other producers would quickly follow in their footsteps on these forward-thinking, ecologically sustainable measures!

Covezzo NV Prosecco Rosé DOC Extra-Dry Organic & Vegan 11.5% $13
A blend of Glera and Pinot Nero, as prescribed by the new (as of 2019) Prosecco Rosé DOC, I was surprised to read that the suggested serving temperature was 42-46° F. This is warmer than most suggestions, but I agree with it as this bottling has good flavor that deserves to be enjoyed rather than hidden by over-chilling. The wine is ballet slipper pink and glimmering in appearance. Dainty aromatics with mineral overtones are accompanied by peach skin and plump apricot with an appealingly dry finish (also 12 g/L residual sugar). Mild, gracious bubbles combine with harmonious acidity for good lift. The moderate finish brings back the minerally tones.

Covezzo NV Prosecco DOC Extra-Dry Organic & Vegan 11.5% $13
Certified organic by Valoritalia and Vegan by ICEA, this is 85% Glera with a 15% mix of other regional, permitted grapes. Notably dry with only 12 g/L of residual sugar, this is a smartly balanced Extra-Dry. Elegant, integrated acidity meshes nicely with the mildly flavored and rather light-weight body. This is an easy wine to sip yet will also do well at the table. It smells of spring flowers and tastes of white peaches with hints of papaya. Interestingly, this undergoes a 60-day fermentation like the Rosé DOC. While the Rosé DOC requires it, the Prosecco DOC only requires 30 days. This surely also endows the wine with additional character and refinement.
