Nyetimber Brilliance - Blanc de Blancs 2013
I've had the pleasure to get to know Brad Greatrix at the International Wine Challenge over the last eight years. Also, I've had many opportunities at the same competition to get to know English Sparkling Wine fairly well. Of course, the two spheres intersect.
Brad and his wife Cherie Spriggs - Nyetimber's winemaker and head winemaker, respectively - have served since 2007 as the leading lights for wine at this historic property - known to William the Conqueror, Henry VIII and, of course, Queen Elizabeth II.
This bottling - along with the story of Cherie and Brad - is a testament to just how dynamic this category is and will continue to be.

Nyetimber 2013 Blanc de Blancs England 12% $82
Enticing from the first whiff, the tale-tell bouquet of traditional method sparkling wines bursts from the glass with yeasty and citrusy notes. On the palate, fresh baguette, yellow grapefruit and pomelo demand attention from the start. Zippy acidity and divinely small bubbles deliver freshness while gently framing the mid-weight palate. As gentle fizz tingles the palate, a chalky tone emerges. Thoroughly delightful and harmonious, this pure Chardonnay is irresistible.
