Tasting Viña VIK

I recall Viña Vik hitting the US wine scene about five years ago. The labels jumped into the wine fray with great fanfare. The wide range of vintages was interesting to taste, and they prove that the wines - at least these specific bottlings - can age to benefit. However, they made it harder to see the stylistic winemaking differences between the wines.

David Finlayson 2013 Chenin Blanc Single Vineyard Old Vine Camino Africana 13.5%: This characterful wine is composed of fruit harvested from bush vines planted in the Bottelary Hills of Stellenbosch in 1947. These vines are some of the oldest in the Cape.

Soul Tree is unusual in almost every way, giving good reason for its motto “Character is Everything”. Its wines come from Indian soils – specifically the western Nasik Valley – but its wines aren’t sold on the peninsula.
