Domaine Bousquet Virgen: A Convincing Line-Up

Two years since its introduction to the US market, the Domaine Bousquet Virgen ("virgin" in English) line has expanded from one to three reds. Tasting these two, it's no surprise because the wines deliver vivacious, fresh fruit with good structural balance for a smart SRP of only $13.

Moreover, the attractive, brightly-colored and elegant labels make an impact that aligns with the wines' motto of making earth-friendly - even vegan-friendly, wines with only naturally occurring sulfites. Hence, the wines proudly bear a USDA Organic label as well as a "No Added Sulfites" assertion.

I'm always cautious when it comes to no-sulfites-added wines that are shipped long distances, but I'm absolutely thrilled with these fresh, unoaked, hearty reds that are just as accessible price-wine. Given the wide distribution of these wines, Domaine Bousquet may be well-placed to change other minds as wary as mine very soon. Moreover, it's very impressive to see a broad distribution wine tackle the supply chain issues of keeping these wines in top condition to the end consumer. I wish them much success.

Domaine Bousquet 2020 Virgen Organic Malbec Tupungato Uco Valley 14.5% $13
Bursting with freshness, this juicy, unoaked stunner sings of blackberries that swan dive into all sorts of cherries on the palate. Licorice, menthol and asphalt dynamize the nose and palate. Oozing with juiciness yet well-strapped in by bustling acidity and somewhat choppy tannins, this is just plain fun to enjoy.

Domaine Bousquet 2020 Virgen Organic Red Blend Tupungato Uco Valley 14.3% $13
The three grape varieties represented here (about one-third each of Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc) are co-fermented. It's the oenological equivalent of "team-building", to ensure that all components are working together as best as possible. The result delivers what tastes like oodles of small, juicy forest berries crushed directly onto the palate. Dark earth, licorice and tar give a particularly brooding - if rather long - after-taste. The pleasant acidity offer generous refreshment through a single sip.
