A New Name on a Label at Ramey Wine Cellars

Though nine years in production, this 2016 Chardonnay has been released for the first time under the Fort Ross-Seaview appellation. Though hailing from a chilly, rugged stretch of the Sonoma Coastline, it tastes definitively like a David Ramey Chardonnay to me. By that I mean that it avoids tasting lean and meager, like so many of the wines made from neighboring vines. David's Chardonnays always show balance and finesse, with a seamlessness and ease that only a master can consistently harness.

Ramey Wine Cellars 2016 Chardonnay Fort Ross-Seaview 14.5% $42
Concentrated flavors of succulent golden raisins and luscious Alphonso mango graciously intertwine with a minimalist's spice accent drawn from 12% new French oak. This wine's ripe, full-bodied girth is smartly counterbalanced by its buoyant acidity and pleasantly chewy texture. The textural weave of the palate makes this a wine that complements food. Moreover, it should stand up well to more complex dishes thanks to its flavor laden and lingering finish. It's tempting today, but there is no need to rush to enjoy it.
